Cannabis law in Phichit Thailand

  1. Medical Cannabis: In 2018, Thailand became one of the first Asian countries to legalize medical cannabis. The Narcotic Act of 1979 was amended to remove specific cannabis strains with low THC content from the list of prohibited narcotics. This allowed for the medical use of cannabis for patients with qualifying conditions.
  2. Medical Cannabis Access: Patients with certain medical conditions, such as chronic pain, epilepsy, multiple sclerosis, nausea from chemotherapy, and more, were eligible to apply for medical cannabis treatment. They had to obtain a prescription from a licensed healthcare professional and register with the Thailand Food and Drug Administration to access medical cannabis products legally.
  3. Medical Cannabis Products: The Thai government authorized the production and sale of medical cannabis products, including cannabis oils and certain cannabis-infused medications, through licensed medical facilities and pharmacies. This was done to ensure the quality and safety of medical cannabis products.
  4. Recreational Use: Despite the legalization of medical cannabis, recreational use of cannabis remained illegal and strictly prohibited in Thailand. Possession, use, and distribution of cannabis for non-medical purposes could lead to severe penalties, including fines and imprisonment.
  5. Hemp: Hemp, a variety of cannabis with very low THC levels (less than 0.3% THC by dry weight), was recognized separately from marijuana. Thailand allowed the cultivation of hemp for industrial and commercial purposes, such as in textiles, food products, and cosmetics. However, hemp cultivation required obtaining the necessary permits and adhering to strict regulations.
  6. Penalties: Prior to the changes in cannabis laws, Thailand had strict drug laws with severe penalties for cannabis-related offenses. Penalties for cannabis possession, use, or trafficking could result in imprisonment and fines, particularly for large quantities of cannabis or involvement in drug trafficking.
